Follow on Google News | Civil Air Patrol Will Participate in Aviation Learning Center at National Championship Air RacesBy: Civil Air Patrol The popular Heritage area of the Reno-Stead Airport will transform into 81,000 square feet of learning space throughout the entire week at the Air Races. Everyone is invited to visit the Aviation Learning Center. Members of the Nevada Wing of the Civil Air Patrol will participate by hosting an informational table in the Main Tent of the Aviation Learning Center. A special event celebrating the 75th birthday of Civil Air Patrol will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 18. Founded on December 1, 1941, one week before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, by more than 150,000 citizens concerned about the defense of America's coastline. CAP pilots flew more than one-half million hours, were credited with sinking two enemy submarines and rescued hundreds of crash survivors during World War II. CAP became the auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force in 1948; charged with three primary missions – aerospace education, cadet programs and emergency services. The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, ushered CAP into a new era of homeland defense. CAP volunteers transported blood and medical supplies, provided communication and transportation support, and assisted state and federal officials. On Aug. 28, 2015, Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, Air Force Chief of Staff, announced the CAP officially a member of the U.S. Air Force's Total Force, joining the regular, guard and reserve forces as American Airmen. CAP's work in response to Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and other emergencies has continued to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness and potential of dedicated volunteers who embody the CAP motto...
