OMAHA, Neb. - Aug. 31, 2016 - PRLog -- An effort to educate the public and prevent suicide is being driven by a local non-profit in conjunction with a number of respected health and human service organizations.  The Kim Foundation has partnered with Region 6 Behavioral Healthcare to launch "13minutes", a campaign aimed at raising awareness and reducing the number of suicides within the Omaha metropolitan area and the counties served by Region 6.  "13minutes" seeks to bring the discussion about suicide to the forefront and encourage the community to watch for signs and reach out to friends and loved ones.

The Kim Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those impacted by mental illness and suicide through advocacy, education, and support.  Region 6 Behavioral Healthcare serves Nebraska residents in Douglas, Cass, Dodge, Sarpy, and Washington counties.

On average, a life is lost to suicide in the United States every 13 minutes.  The campaign aims to start the conversation about suicide prevention and to serve as an important reminder that suicide impacts those from all walks of life.  Ultimately, its purpose is to encourage community members to educate themselves about warning signs and what to do if they or someone they love is at risk.

The "13minutes" campaign consists of a PSA, currently running on WOWT – Ch. 6, the campaign's lead media sponsor; digital advertising; Facebook page; public events; and presentations throughout the community.  A website, (, is a reference point for information such as warning signs and examples of real-life situations; tips on having a conversation with someone who is exhibiting signs of suicidal behavior; hotline numbers; and community / national resources.

"Unfortunately we have seen an increase in suicides in our community.  Through this campaign, a collaborative effort, we will work to lessen those numbers and save lives," said Julia Hebenstreit, executive director, The Kim Foundation.  "Each of us can play a part by becoming familiar with the warning signs and what to watch for in ourselves and in a loved one.  It's important to learn how to have that difficult yet crucial conversation about suicide and to be equipped with what resources are available.  That's our goal, to save lives."

In addition to The Kim Foundation and Region 6 Behavioral Healthcare, partners include the Department of Health & Human Services – Nebraska (DHHS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Nebraska Medicine, and Project Harmony.
