Follow on Google News | Venezuelans will march in Canada for recall referendumTORONTO, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver will see peaceful demonstrations for democracy in front of Venezuela's embassy and consulates
According to most analysts, the critical political and social situation in Venezuela may overflow its borders and destabilize the entire region. That is why United Nations, the Organization of American States and other international institutions have stressed the need to carry forward the referendum process as a democratic, peaceful and constitutional solution to the current crisis. The first stage of the process to request a referendum in 2016 was completed last June when hundreds of thousands of signatures were collected by opposition groups gathered under the Democratic Unity Coalition (MUD). Although electoral officials have tried to invalidate or slow the process with technicalities, polls show that close to 80 % of the population wants a change of government through democratic and constitutional procedures. For that to happen, the Recall Referendum must take place before December. If pro-government electoral authorities manage to block the referendum this year it means the actual regime would stay in power until 2019. In order to bind the government of Maduro into accepting a constitutional way-out to the crisis, a joint effort of democratic political parties and non-governmental organizations representing wide sector of civil society are rallying Venezuelans, inside and outside the country, to a massive peaceful demonstration. In Canada these demonstrations will be held in front of the Venezuelan Consulates of Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and the Embassy in Ottawa, as well as in Calgary and Quebec. According to different independent research there are almost 2 million Venezuelans living abroad, most of them in United States, countries in Latin America and Europe. Until 2015 over 30.000 Venezuelans had emigrated to Canada while their number increases monthly as the social-economic situation of the country worsens. The statistics talk by themselves. Among widespread shortages of food and medicines, described as a humanitarian crisis, the crime rates were responsible for 27,500 deaths only during 2015. Together to the highest inflation in the world (reaching 700% by the end of 2016 according to IMF), there were massive closure and exodus of businesses and productive farms due to expropriations or mislead economic policies and rampant misuse of public funds. Transparency International puts the government of Venezuela as one of the most corrupt in the world. The minimum monthly salary is equivalent to US$ 0.73 cents/day. Demonstration at the Venezuelan Consulate in Toronto Echoing the massive protests that will take place in Caracas on September 1st, the Democratic Unity coalition (MUD), the Canada Venezuela Democracy Forum (CVDF) and the Venezuelan Democrat Network in Canada are inviting for a demonstration this Thursday September 1 at 12 pm - 365 Bloor Street East to voice Venezuelans' demand for democracy. These demonstrations will be taken place that same day in more than 30 important cities around the world.
