By: Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Texas "We are very pleased that Steve will be providing his mental health consultation services to our club members" Rick Troutman, President said. "'In today's world kids may face many difficult situations including bullying, peer pressure, family problems, illegal drug exposure and many more other issues plus just trying to be a kid. Now with Steve's expertise hopefully he can help reduce or maybe even eliminate those problems", Troutman stated. Mathis began working with kids when he was a staff member at his local Boys and Girls Clubs in Indianapolis, Indiana. Later he provided assistance to children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral issues at a youth camp in East Texas. While studying to get his Master's Degree in Counseling & Guidance Mathis worked at assorted mental health agencies, psychiatric hospitals and group homes. For the last nine years he has been a behavior specialist for the Carrollton Farmers Branch Independent School District where he focuses on students who daily struggle with challenges such as ADHD, Autism and a variety of learning disabilities. According to Troutman, Mathis will have the opportunity to speak with club members and their parents or guardians in a private area of the club. "Our number one job is to provide a safe place for our club members and help them develop a path for a better educated, healthy and happier life and if we can help improve their mental health that is real plus for our club members," Troutman said.
