NORWALK, Calif. - Aug. 24, 2016 - PRLog -- Coast Plaza Hospital, a facility of Avanti Hospitals, has been designated as a Primary Stroke Center (PSC) by The Joint Commission in collaboration with The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

Recently, a team of surveyors from The Joint Commission evaluated Coast Plaza Hospital's Stroke Center for compliance with the PSC standards and requirements.  The criteria for certification includes stroke education, participation in research, access to advanced imaging technology and demonstration of application and compliance with clinical practice guidelines for a PSC.

"This Primary Stroke Center designation is vital to providing the most advanced medical and life-saving care for patients who suffer from a stroke in Norwalk and its surrounding communities," says Michael Rembis, FACHE, Corporate Chief Executive Officer of Avanti Hospitals.  "Achieving this certification signifies that we have made exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care."

In efforts to provide state-of-the-art stroke care, CPH has also forged a partnership with USC Keck's School of Medicine and Cedars-Sinai Neurosciences Department.  This program will allow their doctors, nurses and patients to interact via video connection directly with the world-class physicians at USC and Cedars-Sinai.

"At CPH we have a multidisciplinary team that provide the latest advances in stroke care.   Because of this collaboration with USC and Cedars-Sinai, our patients have access to the best neurological care and specialists that LA County offers," Said Dr. Tamika M. Burrus, Medical Director of the Stroke Program for Avanti Hospitals.

As a Primary Stroke Center, Coast Plaza Hospital is able to provide affordable, high-quality services to its community with improved outcomes and reduced mortality.  Patients are cared for by highly qualified health professionals including Emergency Room Physicians with specialized training in Stroke Care, Board-Certified Vascular Neurologists and Neurocritical Care Physicians.

"The team at Coast Plaza is extremely proud to be the first Joint Commission Certified Primary Stroke Center in Norwalk. This program will enable our staff to quickly address patients in our community exhibiting the signs and symptoms of a stroke," added Gregory Brentano, Chief Executive Officer of Coast Plaza Hospital.  "Our highly-trained staff, along with the doctors at USC-Keck, are able to intervene fast.  That will make all the difference to help ensure our community's most critical healthcare needs are met."

Each year, approximately 795,000 people suffer from a new or recurrent stroke.  Recognizing the first signs and symptoms and acting fast is crucial in successful treatment and recovery.  Coast Plaza Hospital is the first hospital in Norwalk that is a certified Primary Stroke Center.  This will allow citizens in the local communities who are exhibiting the signs of symptoms of a stroke to remain close to home while receiving high-quality critical care.
