California Surf Museum To Honor Surfing Legend Nat Young At 9th Annual Gala Fundraiser

SAN DIEGO - Aug. 24, 2016 - PRLog -- A world-class surf celebration is in the works for the California Surf Museum (http://www.surfmuseum.org/) (CSM) as it celebrates its 30th year in business. The museum will hold its 9th Anniversary Gala Fundraiser honoring Nat Young (http://www.natyoung.com/bio.html) from Sydney, Australia, winner of the '66 World Surfing Championships at the newly constructed Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego. The event is expecting to bring together hundreds of surfing legends, current professionals and fans from all over the world.

The '66 contest put San Diego on the world map of surfing as Young rode his famous "Magic Sam" longboard with style, grace and powerful carves – edging out Jock Sutherland and Corky Carroll, as well as contest favorite noserider David Nuuhiwa of Huntington Beach, Calif. Soon after, Young and fellow Australian Bob McTavish pioneered and ushered in the shortboard revolution with "vee-bottom boards."

Young competed from 1963-1991 capturing four world championship titles and was elected to the Australian Surfing Hall of fame in 1987. The 2016 recipient of the museum's annual "Silver Surfer Award" which is given to a surfer that continues to make significant contributions to the culture and lifestyle of surfing. Young is recognized as one of the greatest surfers in the history of the sport. "It will be an absolute privilege to honor Nat with this award, he's a legend and his contributions to the sport continue to this day," said CSM president, Jim Kempton.

The board of directors and staff of CSM cordially invites its members and general public to come celebrate the annual Gala fundraiser, Saturday October 29, SpringHill Suites Marriott ocean view terrace from 4 p.m. – 10 p.m.

The evening will consist of cocktail reception along with hors d'oeuvres prepared by Executive Chef Jared Hills of Hello Betty's Fish House, followed by a succulent sunset dinner overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Oceanside Pier. Following dinner – music will be provided by Tower 7 while guests roam and admire surfboards up for auction, silent auction items offering handcrafted surf boards, travel destinations, one-of-a-kind items, art, fine dining and wine tasting gift certificates, sporting events, and more. The Gala always attracts a surprise guest appearance, last year Jason Mraz entertained event goers with an acoustic variation of "Lucky."

The evening highlights include Young receiving the prestigious Silver Surfer Award, along with the auctioning of three "Magic Sam" tribute surfboards shaped by master craftsmen Bill Stewart, Gary Linden and Tommy Maus. Donated by US Blanks, foam will be shaped to Young's original specifications -- while each shaper will create their own stylistic finish.
