■Shinkyogoku

HOMARE is located in the bustling Shinkyogoku shopping area in the heart of Kyoto. The area was once an entertainment center lined with theaters where plays, traditional joruri music and comedy were performed, as well as restaurants. During the 1900's the area drew attention as one of the three major entertainment centers of Japan, the other two being Asakusa in Tokyo and Sennichimae in Osaka.

The history of this area dates back even further to the Heian period (9th~12th century), since then witnessing and withstanding the various historical turning points of Japan to this present day.HOMARE itself is in a location with strong connections to Kyoto's history. For one,

it is located within the grounds of Seishin-in Temple, where renowned 11th century poet Izumi Shikibu visited. And just one block away from HOMARE is the site of Omiya inn, where revolutionary hero Sakamoto Ryoma was assassinated in 1867. The site is visited by many Ryoma fans and history buffs. Also one block away is the site of Ikedaya inn, where Shinsengumi (shogunate guardsmen) fought a fierce battle with their foes in 1864. This famous battle has been depicted in many novels and movies. We established HOMARE in Shinkyogoku because the area has been the stage for many pivotal historical events, and as such is the ideal area to stroll around wearing periodic costumes and experience the thrill of witnessing history.
