Follow on Google News | Great Dock Canoe Race To Return, New Leadership AnnouncedAnnual Tradition to Continue with Help from the Naples Junior Chamber (Jaycees)
By: The Dock at Crayton Cove The Naples Jaycees have committed to operating the event through a careful arrangement with Vin DePasquale, event founder and owner of The Dock at Crayton Cove and Riverwalk at Tin City, two renowned local restaurants. What started in the Spring of 1977 as an end-of-season celebration of The Dock at Crayton Cove's inaugural year, the Great Dock Canoe Race now draws thousands of spectators by land and bay to watch competitors participate in canoe races in various categories such as ambitious amateurs, truly tenacious, and practically professionals. Each year, the event has a theme, which serves as the inspiration for the decorated canoes that compete for the best-dressed prize. Additionally, the Great Dock Canoe Race provides a grant to a worthy children's charity each year - a charitable tradition the Jaycees intend to keep. Crayton Cove will still serve as the host location for the event. The leadership of the Naples Jaycees will oversee event organization, promotion and operation. "The Great Dock Canoe Race was designed to celebrate the heart of Naples, our community and its residents," said DePasquale. "It's been my pleasure and honor to work with so many individuals and businesses over the years to produce this event and support local non-profits along the way. I am pleased that the Naples Junior Chamber has decided to continue this tradition and that more good work be done as a result." "The Naples Jaycees are excited to continue Naples' oldest and best tradition: The Great Dock Canoe Race. We look forward to working with Vin DePasquale and his team to ensure that the Great Dock Canoe Race not only continues its forty-year tradition, but also grows with the expanding Naples community for years to come," commented Matthew P. Flores, Esq., President of the Naples Junior Chamber. "As local young professionals, we are energized for the task of making sure the Great Dock Canoe Race retains its status as the best event in Naples." The Naples Jaycees, the local chapter of Junior Chamber International, have served the Naples community for over fifty years. Historically known for their haunted houses, involvement with the Fourth of July fireworks, and influence in moving the county seat from Everglades City to Naples, the Naples Jaycees reorganized under new leadership in 2014. Today, the Naples Jaycees are a thriving young professional organization known for providing young, active citizens with opportunities for networking, community service, and professional and personal development. Jaycees members are known for their community involvement, both through the Naples Jaycees and in their individual capacities. The Great Dock Canoe Race was created as a celebration for friends and locals that signified that season was over and summer was coming. It was designed to support the community and create a fun experience for participants and onlookers alike. Thanks to another like-minded group in the Jaycees, the tradition will continue in perpetuity.
