BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Aug. 12, 2016 - PRLog -- The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Simpson Gumpertz & Heger as a winner of their 2016 Bronze Engineering Excellence Award for work on the Hoover Mason Trestle in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at the recent ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala with emcees MA State Senator Karen Spilka and MA Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack.

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, with offices throughout the country, including Boston, was retained by client Wallace Roberts & Todd, LLC to reinvent the Hoover Mason Trestle which had been abandoned for many years.  Originally built in 1906, the trestle at the historic Bethlehem Steel plant once supported ore-filled rail cars transporting raw materials from the ore yards to the steel plant's large furnaces.  The reinvented trestle is now the backbone of a new half-mile-long elevated promenade offering pedestrian views into the historic steel plant.  Visitors can use a monumental stair or elevator to access the elevated walkway, which follows a sinuous path along the railway tracks.

"The winning projects exemplify ingenuity and professionalism and represent the breadth of engineering's contribution to our everyday lives," said ACEC/MA President David Vivilecchia. "They are outstanding examples of how engineers connect communities, provide safe and reliable water and energy, and make our buildings safe and efficient. The professional engineers and their colleagues at our member firms are dedicated to working on quality infrastructure, which wouldn't otherwise exist. These outstanding projects are but a few examples of the quality work designed by Massachusetts and Rhode Island engineering firms."
