Skye Canyon Presents Skye & Stars: An Evening of Stargazing with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society

LAS VEGAS - Aug. 11, 2016 - PRLog -- Skye Canyon (http://www.skyecanyon.com) hosts Skye & Stars, an evening of stargazing with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (LVAS) on Saturday, September 10, 2016. Picnicking and music by DJ Tonearmz start at 6:30 p.m.; telescopes are open for viewing from 7:30 until 9 p.m. The event takes place at Skye Canyon Park and is free and open to the public.

Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic of food and beverages and blankets; picnic boxes provided by Rachel's Kitchen will also be available for $10.

LVAS will provide telescopes and two Mallincams, a powerful high-tech astronomy video camera. Officers of the club will be on hand to assist guests using the telescopes and act as guides on what Nebulas, planets, stars and galaxies in the sky to focus on that evening.

"Skye Canyon is in the perfect location for celestial sightings. Early to mid-September, individuals are blown away when they see Saturn's moons and rings through a telescope," said Greg McKay, Las Vegas Astronomical Society president. "Other cool solar sights in September include Mars, the moon and the possibility of seeing an Iridium flare, which is a low orbiting satellite reflecting bright sunlight as it streaks across the sky. Kids love them because they appear and disappear like magic."

LVAS is a non-profit organization of amateur astronomers that was formed to promote astronomy in Southern Nevada for the sole purpose of educating and sharing their astrological passion with the public. They provide support to schools and other organizations with similar programs.  They also provide educational opportunities and outreach for youth science programs, Scout Troops, service agencies and other organizations with an interest in astronomy.

"As the base camp for the great outdoors, Stars and Skye is the perfect event to end the summer," said Troy Meier, Skye Canyon Park's general manager. "It is a priority at Skye Canyon to build a sense of community for our residents and neighbors and this event helps us to accomplish that goal."
