In Their Words: FCOC Patients Share their Journey to a Family

Most infertility patients describe the fertility process as a journey. The Fertility Center of Charleston shares tips from patients for those starting their journey to a family. Dr. Stephanie Singleton treats patients in Savannah and Charleston.

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Aug. 4, 2016 - PRLog -- Infertility is often described by patients as a journey. And for many, it is a journey filled with fear and the unknown.  The Fertility Center of Charleston and Dr. Stephanie Singleton recognize this and work with patients to help make their fertility journey a positive and successful one.  Below are a few tips from FCOC patients that will help others along the way.

1.Throw expectations out the Window.
Says a Savannah patient, "My experience at FCOC was not at all what I was expecting.  I went into it feeling that it was going to be complicated and expensive.  I had this vision of cold rooms and sterile colors.  I was all wrong!"
The Fertility Center of Charleston team is dedicated to providing highly individualized care and compassion to couples, women and men seeking fertility treatment. At the first visit, Dr. Singleton will take time to listen to the history and experience. She will conduct an ultrasound evaluation of the pelvis and ask for a semen analysis to create an evaluation and treatment plan based upon each unique situation. After meeting with Dr. Singleton, patients will speak with a nurse who will guide them through the process of evaluation and treatment.
Says a graduated patient, "Immediately during our first consultation, we felt a warmth and welcome from Dr. Singleton and her staff.  Everything was laid out so clearly and in language we could understand.  We were encouraged to ask questions and voice our concerns.  The office was comfortable and homey and everyone was so friendly. All my worries went out the window."

2.  It's not just IVF - It's a Process

Says one patient, "I had it in my head that it was going to work on the first shot due to my age and health. I never thought about medicines being a part of my experience. As we got further into the process we realized baby making is not so cut and dry."
Infertility is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Women and men find the root cause of infertility in a fertility evaluation. There are many causes of infertility that a timely evaluation help pinpoint. Fertility treatment options are effective and vary based on the individual. A fertility evaluation is critical to providing good information for the selection of optimal therapy.
One patient gives sage advice, "My advice would be to not put so much pressure on yourself and STAY AWAY from the internet. All it does is fill you with worry you don't need and is usually wrong. No matter what you are google searching, stop and shoot an email to FCOC and get a real answer."

3.  RELAX and Trust the Journey
"Go into it with a relaxed open mind and trust that you are in the most caring hands.  It's a journey and it will happen when it's meant to happen and that perfect baby will be worth every month gone by, every tear, shot, patch and pill."
After patients complete their first visit, FCOC hopes that they will leave with a greater understanding of their issues of infertility, the evaluations that are necessary to create a plan and the options for treatment. Most of all, FCOC hopes patients leave with renewed hope and trust that FCOC can help them to create a family.
One patient sums it up, "FCOC became more like a family than just doctors and nurses. They will always be a part of my life."  Another adds, "I had the best experience at The Fertility Center of Charleston.  I was so scared and lost when we first walked in but from the first appointment to the last the staff was there to answer any and all questions.  They were so comforting.  I wish I could stay for the whole journey."
