China Expert Tom Manning Interviewed on Public PerspectiveTelevision broadcast offers intriguing viewpoint on how China is developing its own version of capitalism
By: Tom Manning During the half hour show, which can be seen both online and on Comcast's Public Access channel 19 in the Chicago area, Manning offered an insider's insight into how the Chinese government continues to adopt pioneering techniques for management, many of which are styled after Western practices. "The state-owned enterprises of today in China are much more efficient, leaner, and just as competitive as major corporations worldwide," said Manning. "China's unique model of capitalism is moving away from centralized planning and towards a Chinese version of a free market economy. The size and global reach of these SEOs are a force to be reckoned with, and the U.S. must learn how to interact with them successfully over the next decade." Manning has been widely quoted as one of the leading experts on Chinese innovation and policy, and notes that Western corporations risk falling behind if they underestimate China's potential. The interview focused on how the U.S. government, as well as Western corporations, can successfully interact with China over the next decade. "The U.S. and China are the two most important large nations in the world, and their bilateral relationship is the most significant thing we should be focusing on in the coming years," he said. "With three times the population of the U.S., and an economy that will inevitably surpass that of the United States, interaction between the two nations on a wide range of issues is inevitable and essential for both sides." Manning described his current work at University of Chicago in developing a 50-year forward-looking, long-term strategic cooperation agreement between the two nations. "This cooperation agreement would allow both sides to share their concerns about how they operate, allow each side to understand the principles of the other, formulate joint principles for mutual collaboration, and determine how best to handle any conflicts that may arise." China already has dozens of bilateral relationships throughout the world, and many are very productive and can serve as an example of what the U.S.-China relationship could become over time. A prolific author, Manning was recently featured in Industry Week in his article "China Technology Innovation Comes of Age" and in Chief Executive magazine in his article "5 Key Strategies that Should Define Your China Strategy." He was also the subject of an in-depth interview with Global Finance magazine, where the editors interviewed him on the nation's quiet innovation revolution. He also recently shared his insights in an article in World Policy Journal, where he was quoted commenting on the strategic changes being made in China that will impact businesses worldwide. End
