In autumn 2016 Rosatom may sign a contract for the third stage of NPP Kudankulam

This autumn Rosatom can sign a contract for the construction of the third stage of NPP Kudankulam in India, said the head of the State Corporation, Sergei Kiriyenko on Saturday.

SINGAPORE - July 28, 2016 - PRLog -- "This year. Everything is in working conditions and the contract can be singed in the autumn", answered S. Kiriyenko the question of journalists about the possible timing of the signing of the contract for the construction of the third stage of NPP Kudankulam.

The assistant of the President of the Russian Federation Yuri Ushakov said in June that the documents for the construction of the third stage of nuclear power plants are being coordinated.

"The biggest collaborative project in the energy sector is the construction of nuclear power plant Kudankulam with Russian assistance. The power unit № 1 operates at full capacity, the unit № 2 is at the stage of physical start-up. The second stage of NPP's construction (blocks №3 and 4) are in the stage of the preparation, the documents for the third stage (blocks №5 and 6) are in the process of coordination", said Yuri Ushakov.

In the interview with television NTV in June, S. Kiriyenko reported that Rosatom plans to sign contracts for the construction of units № 5 and 6 of NPP Kudankulam in 2016. "Now we are starting the second unit of NPP Kudankulam, the first one was launched two years ago. We have already signed contracts for the third and fourth units. By the end of this year, most likely, the contracts for the fifth and sixth units will be signed. Moreover, we have signed the agreement for two construction sites, where the blocks will be built", said the head of State Corporation about projects in India.

Previously it was assumed that the agreement for blocks № 5 and 6 will be signed in the first quarter of 2016.

NPP Kudankulam is being built in India under a bilateral agreement of 20 November 1988 and the amendments thereto of 21 June 1998. The construction of the first two power units with VVER-1000 reactors with total capacity of 2,000 MW under the management of JSC Atomstroyexport was started in 2002.

The power unit №1 of NPP Kudankulam was put into operation. The construction of the second nuclear unit is over, currently there is an adjustment of the equipment.

In April 2014 Russia and India signed a general framework agreement on the construction of the second stage of NPP Kudankulam, which includes power units № 3 and 4.

The "road map" for cooperation in atomic energy between India and Russia envisages the construction of a total of 12 units in India, including on-site Kudankulam - from 4 to 8 units.

Moreover, an agreement on the allocation by India one more site for the construction of Russian-designed nuclear power plants was reached.
