Sixth Annual Race For Refuge Raises Funds to Care For Victims of Sex Trafficking

ST. LOUIS - July 25, 2016 - PRLog -- The Covering House (http://www.thecoveringhouse.org/), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization providing refuge and restoration to children and teens who have experienced sexual exploitation or trafficking, announces the Sixth Annual Race For Refuge will take place on Saturday, September 3 at Tower Grove Park Sons of Rest Pavilion. Race For Refuge is the organization's primary fundraising event and raised over $35,000 with 530 participants in 2015.

Race For Refuges is a 10K run, 5K run and a 5K walk coordinated by Big River Race Management (http://bigriverracemanagement.com/). The race uses Chrono Track B-Tag system, the gold standard in chip timing, for 10K and 5K runners and measurements meet USATF standards. Official times will be posted online at www.bigriverrunning.com on race day. Awards will be given to the First, Second & Third Place male and female finishers in the 16-49 age group, First Place male and female finishers in the 50+ group, and First place male and female finishers in the 15 and younger age group. All participants receive a Race For Refuge T-shirt, swag bag, and snacks after the race.

This year, The Covering House is planning for 600 participants and raising $45,000 through registration fees, donations and individual/team fundraising. The event is family friendly, and includes a DJ, hands-on experiences for the kids, and photo opportunities with select super heroes, princesses and special guest, Mrs. Missouri Lauren Ziegler. Tim Ezell will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

In January 2013, The Covering House officially launched community services for young female victims of domestic trafficking. Currently, The Covering House provides direct services to sexually exploited and sexually trafficked children and teenagers and community services in the areas of training and education.

Our Long Term Therapeutic Home provides an integrated program that works together within the areas of clinical, educational, experiential, spiritual and recreational. In addition to the traditional therapy, we incorporate specialized therapy such as music, horticulture, equine and sensory diets. The program is designed for a one year stay. After their stay, we aim to provide a seamless transition to foster care, back home or transitional living by continuing to offer care through our community based services.

Since beginning services, The Covering House has provided services for 64 girls and provided community trainings to approximately 900 St. Louis City law enforcement, 70 foster care families, medical professionals, and other social service agencies.
