Long Run Massacre and Floyd's Defeat Set for September 10-11, 2016, in Shelbyville, KY

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. - July 24, 2016 - PRLog -- ThePainted Stone Settlers will re-enact a bloody chapter in Shelbyville's (http://www.visitshelbyky.com/) frontier history during the weekend of Sept. 10-11, 2016, at Red Orchard Park. The Long Run Massacre and Floyd's Defeat recall the 1781 Indian attack on evacuating settlers as well as the ambush of an aid party that followed, leaving many dead or wounded. The juried re-enactors take their name from an outpost built two and a half miles north of present-day Shelbyville in 1780 by Daniel Boone's brother, Squire Boone, and 13 families.

"I have this minute returned from a little excursion against the Enemy & my party, 27 in number, are all dispersed & cut to pieces except 9 who came off the field . . . ," Col. John Floyd wrote to George Rogers Clark immediately following the ambush. "I don't yet know who are killed . . . A party was defeated yesterday near the same place & many Women and Children wounded."

This living history event will take place on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon, followed by a Prisoner Exchange. Additionally, there will be heritage skills demonstrations such as spinning, weaving, blacksmithing, fire starting and doing laundry. A Native American campsite will be depicted as well as militia life and customs of the 18th century. Experience the sounds and smells of an 18th century cannon. Visit with Kentucky authors to hear about their books. Meet and chat with costumed interpreters.

The Sons of the American Revolution will provide a special American flag ceremony prior to the battle re-enactment. At dusk on Saturday night, Russell Morris will present traditional Shawnee storytelling and singing.
