Rett University Adds Team of Rett U Coaches

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - July 21, 2016 - PRLog -- Rett University, a Rett Syndrome education program from the nonprofit Girl Power 2 Cure, today announces an extension to their current offering – a Rett U Coach team comprised of four specially trained professionals.

For two years, Rett University has worked behind the scenes to recruit and prepare professionals committed to doing more for students with Rett Syndrome. During this time, Susan Norwell has mentored coaches to build a network of resources that families, educators and therapists can connect with for support and guidance in helping students with Rett Syndrome build communication, language and literacy skills.

Rett U Coaches will be available for one-to-one consults, IEP goal development and eye-gaze device programming. They will also be working with schools and development centers to provide the foundation and context many need when working with students with Rett Syndrome.

Susan Norwell, Rett University co-founder, shares "The expansion of Rett University's team is a dream literally coming true to expand the support we could offer individuals with Rett Syndrome beyond the handful of folks in the market providing support. Our Rett U Coaches have the skill and desire to walk the journey with families. Together, they can provide guidance and education to help our students with Rett Syndrome succeed in school and life with everyone who supports them including families, educators and therapists."

Rett U Coaches:

Kourtney Barnum: Based in Florida, Kourtney has been working in special education with students with complex needs for the past 18 years. Her passion for serving students with complex needs began at an early age growing up with her sister Kristi who has Rett Syndrome. Kourtney shares, "My sister has taught me so much over the years about all that she CAN do when given what she needs to be successful. I'm excited to be supporting the teams of families, teachers and therapists that support individuals with Rett Syndrome."

Kristi Craddock: Based in Florida, Kristi has been working with students of varying disabilities for over 20 years. She works in the Palm Beach County School District as a Rett Syndrome Resource Teacher. Kristi shares, "I am beyond ecstatic to be partnering with Rett University and work alongside so many amazing people supporting students with Rett Syndrome and complex needs."

Abigail Davison-Hoult: Based in the UK, Abigail spent much of her professional career in an IT training and consulting role training business professionals on new software.  Abigail is proud mum to two children, Patrick and Esme. Her daughter Esme was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome in 2013. She shares, "Listening to Susan speak for the first time was a turning point for me, deciding to take control and help teach my daughter to read, write and communicate. I want other families in our situation to know there is something they CAN do to help their child be the best they can be: I want to help that happen for families everywhere."

Callie Ward: Based in the UK, Callie began her AAC journey working in a school for special needs. Shortly after, it was discovered that her niece had Rett Syndrome and she made it her mission to learn everything she could to help her niece succeed with communication and literacy. Callie shares, "Helping my niece to find her voice has been an amazing and rewarding experience and I am so excited to be partnering with Rett University to do more for others."

About Rett Syndrome

Rett Syndrome is a severe neurological disorder that almost exclusively affects females. Every 90 minutes another little girl is born "normal," only to be robbed of her ability to speak, walk, crawl, and use her hands between the ages of one and three. Complications include seizures, sudden death in their sleep and scoliosis. It is considered the most physically disabling childhood neurological disorder and is as prevalent as Cystic Fibrosis, ALS and Huntington's disease. There is no treatment, but in 2007 researchers proved in the lab that Rett Syndrome can be reversed, giving it the potential to be the first curable neurological disorder and playing a key role in understanding other neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, Schizophrenia and Parkinson's.
