Lupus is called the "cruel mystery" because the chronic autoimmune disease can damage any part of the body, including the brain, heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, skin, and joints. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Executive Producer Maurissa Tancharoen's experiences with lupus inspired fellow TV scribes Jennifer Quintenz and Pang-Ni Landrum to launch the charitable fundraising project. They chose the book's title and theme because 90 percent of individuals diagnosed with lupus are women. The "Empower: Fight Like A Girl" anthology features supernatural thrillers, crime mysteries, horror, and comedies. Readers have expressed enthusiasm for the anthology. "Even non-girls will feel empowered by these stories about ordinary, flawed characters finding their own strengths," wrote Lee Goldberg, New York Times bestselling author of "The Chase" and "King City," whose mother lost her hearing to lupus. Entertainment career coach Carole Kirschner said, "Reading 'Empower: Fight Like a Girl''s quirky heroines overcome zombies, evil, and Hollywood scumbags is a treat. With so many different narrative voices, there's a rich mix of styles and tones... each one compelling." The anthology includes contributions from Amy Berg; Cherry Chevapravatdumrong; With attendance topping 130,000 in recent years, Comic-Con has become the focal point for the world of comics conventions.
