DURANGO, Colo. - July 20, 2016 - PRLog -- The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNGRR)™ (http://www.durangotrain.com/), which offers distinctive year-round rail experiences and special events to passengers of all ages in the remote, scenic wilderness and high-mountain landscape of Colorado's San Juan National Forest, today announced it has won the prestigious 2016 Sunset Travel Award for Best Train Experience (http://www.sunset.com/travel/sunset-travel-awards-train-experience) in the West by Time Inc.'s Sunset (http://www.sunset.com/), the premier guide to living in the West.

Selected by a distinguished panel of editors and travel industry influencers, the D&SNGRR is one of 20 winners of the 2016 Sunset Travel Awards (http://www.sunset.com/travelawards), which annually identify and honor the top lodging, dining, cultural, outdoor adventure, activity, and tourist attraction destinations in the West. Currently featured on Sunset.com, which reaches two million unique users per month, the railroad and other award winners will also be spotlighted in the September print issue of the magazine, which has over five million readers every month. A full list of award categories and winners can be found online at www.sunset.com/travelawards.

"Sunset is the travel authority in the West, and our 2016 Travel Award winners, including the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, represent the best of the best," said Irene Edwards, editor-in-chief of Sunset. "With travelers today being overwhelmed with opinions on where to go, where to eat and drink, and what to do, our readers know the Sunset Travel Awards is one list they can trust to plan their next vacation."

In being named this year's Best Train Experience, the D&SNGRR edged three other California-based scenic railroads:  the Farm-to-Fork Cocktail Train in Sacramento; the Napa Valley Wine Train in Napa; and the Reno Fun Train and Sierra Scenic Train in San Francisco.

"While the Durango &Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been honored with many prestigious awards over the years, this is the first time it has been recognized by Sunset, one of the most well-known and respected travel and lifestyle publications in the country," said Allen C. Harper, head of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and chairman and chief executive officer of American Heritage Railways. "The timing of this award couldn't be better, as the entire organization has worked tirelessly this year to design and roll out new and improved products, enhance the overall guest experience, and promote the railroad to new audiences far and wider. From that perspective, it's gratifying to see all of this hard work pay off, and for our entire company to be lauded for its efforts."
