Jacksonville Firm Receives Concussion Mitigation Patent

Protecting the Brain
By: Sports Technologies LLC
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - July 18, 2016 - PRLog -- A research and technology company is one step closer to lowering the number of concussions received by soldiers on battle fields as well as athletes and children on playing fields through its innovative helmet insert.

Sports Technologies LLC (www.sportstechnologiesllc.com) has received a patent for technology that delivers 60% greater protection from impacts to the head when compared to a helmet alone. Active concussion mitigation lessens the severity of impacts to the head. Cutting edge electronics confirm and measure the impacts, discharging CO2 to dissipate and elongate the blow to slow movement of the brain inside the skull – all happening within milliseconds.

ST LLC, based in Jacksonville, Fla., has conducted research for more than four years to combat concussions that typically lead to life-altering traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

Patent Number 938-0823 is known as ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED IMPACT ATTENUATING FLUID CONTAINING CELLS FOR HELMETS and was awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office July 5th.

"ST LLC is close to providing exceptional head protection for any helmet wearer, which will reduce the number and severity of concussions," said William Rick Johnson, CEO and Founder. "Receiving this patent is a huge accomplishment for our company and protects our intellectual property."

The electronically controlled technology is housed in a five-cell padded insert designed to fit in a variety of helmets. Brain contact with the skull and recoil (known as "bounce effect") typically lead to concussions. Frequency and severity of blows to the head can have negative long-term implications on quality of life and treatment costs.

Mark Brunell, ST LLC consultant, played football for five NFL teams during his 19-year professional career. "Player safety should always be front and center. As a former NFL quarterback, current high school football coach and a parent of children who play contact sports, I remain deeply concerned about head injuries. We must employ new initiatives like active mitigation to preserve the game and make it safer for all players," said Brunell.

The Department of Defense confirmed 266,000 concussions from 2002-2012. Sports Technologies has been working with the military studying and integrating this technology into the U.S. Army's Warrior Enhancement Program. Accurate and quick diagnosis is key to recovery. Medical costs over a lifetime are estimated at $4 million per victim. By reducing the frequency and severity of concussions, downstream medical costs can be greatly minimized.

"Our technology will better protect American soldiers, youth and professional, collegiate and recreational athletes. Further, through our medical physiology sensors (PATENT PENDING), our system records and reports vital sign data.

"A medical link transmits information to first responders, trainers, medical staff and anyone on the network to evaluate the health of one who may have incurred a blow to the head or was impacted by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosion. This is achieved in near-real time and sets us apart from all other passive system applications (foam pads) making similar claims," added Johnson.

In recent years, increased funding has been allotted to properly diagnose and treat concussion victims. Unfortunately, the damage has already occurred. ST LLC likens its technology to a pre-emptive safety measure. Active concussion mitigation can do for the brain what applying sunscreen does to minimize the negative effects of sun exposure.

"We believe the best way to deal with concussions and traumatic brain injuries is to avoid them as much as possible," said Johnson. "But that's not always possible. We have not seen and are not aware of any system that can completely prevent concussions. So, the next best option is to reduce the frequency and force of blows to the head that our patented technology provides," said Johnson.

"We get one brain and should do everything possible to protect it."
