"It's amazing how fast we were able to implement our idea. A proof point that IoT and Cloud are becoming so much more accessible to the developer community. That's going enable a whole new wave of innovation." Team Ecobyte's pollution awareness platform provides interactive environmental information to enable residents' enhanced well-being. Ecobyte's product leverages air pollution data from pollution sensors placed on lamp posts throughout the city. Their solution provides holistic pollution information to the city and residents through a hosted Bluemix-cloud platform. To the user, this will be the first interactive, hands-free, voice-activated "Amazon Alexa" for Smart Cities. In addition, they have enabled user-definable alerts via IFTTT integration. Finally, this is enabled by a high performance, low cost hardware leveraging Intel Edison. Other winning solutions included a smart irrigation system using Amazon Alexa, a smart controller for freezer energy optimization using Intel's new IoT Gateway, and a smart chat box that monitors and troubleshoots machines using Samsung's ARTIK Cloud platform for IoT and IBM Watson Dialogue and Retrieve and Ranking service. "This hackathon provided developers an excellent opportunity to experience first-hand how easy it is use Samsung ARTIK Cloud to connect devices and apps to the cloud and to each other," said Jerome Dubreuil, Senior Director Engineering, ARTIK Cloud. "By breaking down device and data silos, ARTIK Cloud is helping developers unleash their creativity to build new IoT services that connect intelligently and seamlessly." The Industrial IoT Hackathon at SEMICON West was one of the first in a series of ReadWrite Hackathons to support the IoT Ecosystem through engagement with a robust developer community. "The event was an incredible learning experience for us. It is amazing how fast we were able to implement our idea using the technology from the sponsors." - Al Linke, Team Leader, Ecobyte. The hackathon attracted over 200 applications from developers. 50 developers came to compete for over $10,000 in prizes from sponsors that included Intel, Amazon Alexa, IBM, and Samsung.
