The Scale Trail Challenge grew out of a need for scale literature designed to help young students in their studies: "All of the scale books that I've worked with in the past have been boring, confusing, incomplete, or a combination of all three," notes Marsh. "I used to struggle to get my kids motivated to practice scales, but then a friend of mine suggested making it a challenge. I put together this system with levels and rewards. Young students need a foundation in scales and theory, and this has made it more accessible to beginning to intermediate cellists of any age." She developed this scale curriculum for her private cello students, and tested the curriculum over the course of six years. With several years of student and parent feedback, the curriculum grew into this book. The result is a child-friendly volume, complete with pictures to color at the end of each level of scales and arpeggios. Scales are organized intuitively, growing from the very simple 1-octave major scales to the complex 2-octave minor arpeggios. The book includes all 24 major and melodic minor scales and arpeggios in 2 octaves. The introduction to the book includes suggestions for teachers, and every scale is fully fingered to aid students in mastering essential finger patterns. Previews are also included at the beginning of Levels 2-10. This book is the first in a series of five books that will eventually include a volume for violin (to be published later this year), viola, double bass, and piano. A continuation of this book for cello will be available next year. It is titled Up to the Bridge: Scales for the Advanced Cellist, and will include scales and arpeggios in 3- and 4-octave.
