City of Monroeville to Sell National Guard Armory Facility via Online Auction at GovDeals.com

By: Monroe County Commission

MONROEVILLE, Ala. - June 28, 2016 - PRLog -- If you have ever heard of the book, or movie, "To Kill a Mockingbird" then you have probably also heard of the town of Monroeville, AL. This iconic town was home to Harper Lee, author of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and Truman Capote, who has come to be known as the author of the first, and best-selling true crime novel "In Cold Blood". Now the town is offering one lucky bidder the opportunity to own property in this idyllic town.

The Monroe County Commission is currently auctioning off the old National Guard Armory facility in town on the online government surplus auction site GovDeals.com.

Monroe County has been selling surplus property and other assets on GovDeals.com for the past eight years and has raised over $260,000 for the county from the auction proceeds. Items sold range from automobiles and RVs to kitchen equipment and office furniture.

Jeff Griffin, County Engineer, says the county has had great success selling on GovDeals.com. "The process is simple, fast, and efficient. Our auctions get seen by people all over the world that then go online and bid on our items. We are very happy with our decision to partner with GovDeals."

The National Guard Armory building up for auction sits on a corner lot with three (3) acres of land, additional storage buildings, and a large paved parking lot. The site has electricity, public water, and both sewer and natural water are available. The interior is primarily a large open area with offices, storage, classrooms, and restrooms on the sides and front. An area at the rear has a storage space, along with an upper level partitioned into additional storage rooms.

While it was last used by the National Guard, the armory facility could be used for a number of different functions. The Old West Palm Beach National Guard Armory in Florida is now a community art center. The National Guard Old Armory in Mississippi is now used as a convention area, renting out space for meetings, proms, and other events. The Old National Guard Armory in Selma, AL now houses the annual Central Alabama National Fair. The possibilities for this location are endless.

Bidding for the facility started in June with an opening bid of $50,000 and will be open until July 13, 2016. Interested buyers can visit the online auction page for more information, including additional property details, photos, and bidder registration instructions at http://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=614&acctid=2183.
