Follow on Google News | Powerful technology fighting to end poverty developed by two non-profits in Pacific NorthwestARES (African Ruggedized Education System) is an education focused project that provides a full suite of high quality digital Primary and Secondary school education content to areas of Kenya/East Africa that do not have access to broadband internet or reliable power. The project is a joint effort between Afretech and Tembo Education Project. Technology behind the ARES system consists of low cost/high powered servers designed to operate in a rugged environment, including long life batteries that will allow them to work through power interruptions. The servers are pre-loaded with an extensive array of primary/secondary educational content, along with a significant amount of adult resource material. Examples: Wikipedia for Education, Khan Academy, Great Books of the World, an array of textbooks, science education videos from Seavuria, classroom admin tools for teachers, a world atlas, the entire TED video library, and much more. Content can easily be added to meet local school needs. Students/teachers can connect to an ARES server with a wireless connection from any device that has a wireless capability and a browser, including desktops, laptops, tablets, or mobile phones. In addition, a teacher can use a low cost battery-based projector to conduct a full class lesson. KCA University is responsible for assembly and support of the two ARES server models, and can handle from 20 - 40 simultaneous users per server - all at a very low cost. Without access to educational materials students in Kenya are failing government exams that will determine whether or not they are allowed to enter high school. With only an eight grade education many students are left to life of poverty. The girls will marry and the cycle begins again. End
