Lao PDR launches an economic development zone attractive for investments, says Healy Consultants

SINGAPORE - June 21, 2016 - PRLog -- Attracted by the investment incentives offered by the governments of Lao PDR and China, global investors and entrepreneurs have so far injected at least US$15 billion into the Joint General Scheme of Mohan-Boten Economic Cooperation Zone.

September 2015 saw the two governments coming together to sign an agreement to establish the economic zones, aiming to attract investments and boost trade and tourism in the region.

Located at the Buten border, the zone focuses on building a processing, logistics and modern services base in four major sectors including the Mohan warehousing logistics base, Yunnan Mohan Port International Logistics Park, the Vegetable Association base and the State Grain Reserve Depot. Other sectors include the mineral products trading centre, duty free shops, cross border market and tourist resort besides other projects.

Speaking last month during a media visit to the zone, the logistics deputy general manager of the Lao Boten Economic Zone Development, Mr Kangpeng, stated that the Boten Specific Economic Zone has attracted over US$10 billion in investments from well over ten companies mainly from China.

"The Lao government has extended sound support for the operation of the Boten Specific Economic Zone as a cooperation project between Laos and China," said Kangpeng.

The deputy general manager also put forth a plea to both Lao PDR and China governments to consider granting visa exemptions and multi-entry visas for entrepreneurs and investors doing business in the joint economic zones.

Foreign investors looking to establish their businesses in the economic zones will enjoy among others incentives complete exemption from corporate and withholding taxes.
