Follow on Google News | Myke Bogan & The Last Artful, Dodgr - Rare Treat (EP)Portland's Emcee/Producer Alliance Wets Your Appetite With Their Latest Four Course Effort
By: EYRST As soon as "Pop!" hits your speakers, it's clear that these three are on another level. The track bangs as hard as it pushes Hip-Hop to its borders with a sound that could actually, well, pop. It also sets the tone for the remaining cuts, with Dodgr flaunting her impressive vocal talents, Bogan commanding attention with his flow and voice, and Tally pulling everything together with a rich canvas of sounds. No surprise, then, that producer Neill Von Tally has quite a diverse set of influences. From jazz legend Thelonious Monk, to rap deity J Dilla, to indie rocker M. Ward, Tally is inspired by it all-even astrophysics and skateboarding. And it's in pulling from those sources, among others, that he was able to weave together beats that are both grounded, and otherworldly. Whereas "Pop!" and "InFlight" are more on the speaker-punishing banger end of the spectrum, the trio dials it back for "Mornin' Dew" and the project's closer, "Jawbreaker." Each song transitions smoothly into the next with a perpetual hum and cloud of smoke, and that quality only adds to the rich backstory of how it all came together. It's one of spontaneity and shared inspiration, with the trio having an inherent chemistry upon hitting the studio. "I'm inspired by the people that I'm getting to do this with," Bogan says. "That's why [Rare Treat] happened in those 36 hours." Dodgr's simultaneously off-kilter and catchy rhythms were too influenced by her musical partners, and admits to being inspired by every rhythm. "Even the ones that aren't catchy," she says, "I'm inspired to make them better." As for what's next, well, we'll leave that to the the artists. "It wouldn't be a 'rare treat' if there were any more or any less," Dodgr says, before Bogan chimes in, "It's a cliffhanger…" Tracklist: 01. Pop! 02. InFlight 03. Mornin Dew 04.
