ALBANY, N.Y. - June 16, 2016 - PRLog -- The 2016 Honda Civic has been made 3 inches longer and 2 inches wider than its predecessor, resulting in best-in-class interior space. However, it is clear that this hasn't come at the cost of safety: The 2016 Honda Civic Coupe has now been named a 2016 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.* The redesigned model makes more extensive use of high-strength steel, and has been built around Honda's next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure to ensure that impact energy is directed away from the passenger compartment instead of through it.

The Civic also utilizes tailor-tempered B-pillars and rear frame structures, a new front passenger's safety vent airbag, SmartVent front side curtain airbags, and side curtain airbags with an advanced rollover sensor. Experts expected these changes to yield outstanding crash scores, and they weren't wrong; in addition to its IIHS status, it has also earned a 5-star rating from the NHTSA.**

Few vehicles ever merit Top Safety Pick+ status, and the criteria were made even tougher for 2016. Eligible vehicles needed to score a top mark of Good across every crash-test category, including the notoriously tricky Small Front Overlap segment, as well as either an Advanced or Superior rating in terms of Frontal Crash Protection.

The 2016 Honda Civic was able to meet all of these standards, but the fact that it comes with vehicle stability assist, traction control, four-channel anti-lock brakes with brake assist, motion-adaptive electric power steering, and a tire pressure monitoring system as standard means that drivers will be kept from ever putting the vehicle's resilience to the test.

If even that isn't enough, drivers will be able to add a comprehensive range of driver assistance technologies when they opt for the available Honda Sensing Suite, including collision mitigation braking system, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist system, and road departure mitigation.

*The 2016 Accord Sedan with Honda Sensing™, the 2016 Accord Coupe with Honda Sensing™, the 2016 Pilot with Honda Sensing™, and the 2016 CR-V Touring have been awarded the coveted 2016 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in recognition of their superior crash safety performance.

**Safety matters most, and the 2016 CR-V, Accord, Fit, Odyssey, HR-V, and Pilot earned top marks with a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Government 5-Star Safety Ratings are part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's New Car Assessment Program (www.safercar.gov). Model tested with standard side airbags (SAB).
