Healy Consultants reviews Tunisia's economy

By: Healy Consultants

ARIANA, Tunisia - June 10, 2016 - PRLog -- Tunisia is well known for its fertile soil and is one of the largest exporters of olive oil and dates in the world, with an estimated 300,000 metric tons of olive oil and 100,000 metric tons of dates. The massive agricultural production has saved Tunisia's economy from a catastrophic crisis. Recently, Tunisia signed an agreement with the United States for loan guarantees worth US$500 million to boost the North African country's struggling economy.

Asma Hmaied, who studies agronomy engineering and is a member of the group Search for Common Ground, a project for youth leadership in Tunisia, says "I believe that what could roll the economic wheel in Tunisia is not tourism, but agriculture."

Tunisia is yet to recover from the attacks in Sousse and Bardo in 2015 that left dozens of tourists dead. The terrorist assault led to a massive decline in tourism, an industry that accounted for about 14.5% of the country's GDP. Hammamet, one of the largest tourist spots in Tunisia has been attracting tourists for decades, but recently the touristic site has been losing its clients. Because of this drop in tourism, the Tunisian authorities have been looking for other alternatives, such as hosting international events to demonstrate that the security situation has been improving.

Meanwhile, and despite the economic crisis, Tunisia was the only country of the Arab Spring (http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2014/01/arab-sp...) that established a peaceful transition of power. Diversification of the economy and investing in the agricultural sector will aid in boosting the economy of the country and luring investors interested in agriculture back into the country. The financial boost from the US government will also go a long way in bridging the economic gap.
