Attributes for the Modern Project Deliverer

Why do good projects go bad? Is it the maturity of the organisation, its people, the organisation has too many goals that it focuses on or the people entrusted with delivery, cannot execute?

1.     Visionary deliverers. Modern project managers are able to visualise the project delivery lifespan during conception of the project and anticipate risks, issues and dependencies that can jeopardize deadlines, budgets and user acceptance.

2.     Understanding the business. The debate has been raging for decades on whether a project manager must have subject matter expertise or not. Organisation seems like an obvious characteristic of a modern project manager, but it manifests itself in a variety of ways, including in an ability to stay focused on the higher purpose and to prioritise competing responsibilities. 5.     Communicators vs connectors. Communication is key for reporting however what is critical for the modern project manager it the change that his project will bring into the organisation and or its customers.  The Modern Project Manager has to connects with

·         every team member to ensure, incremental and consistent delivery is achieved.

·         stakeholders to ensure that they steer and prepare the organisation for the change that is being delivered, and

·         the sponsorship team ensure they can take to market the products or ensure the efficiencies or effectiveness is achieved.

6.     They're executionists. Sometimes project managers can be too analytical, the modern project manager uses previous delivered plans, leveraging and adapting models and design the key focus areas are selecting the right team members, enlighten them on the higher purpose and focusing them on deliver.  As Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan with Charles Burck mentions in their book Execution, "…A leader must micromanager the critical elements of what will make or break the success of a strategy."  Shiloh add, "Used in a project management context: the critical path of delivery is the make or break for the project."
