Follow on Google News | Healy Consultants shares insights on doing business in HaitiBy: Healy Consultants The common perception that Haiti is only about 'extreme poverty' couldn't be further from the truth. Only a quarter of the country's population has purchasing power while the rest still require basic services and goods that must be realized. Speaking at a recent investment conference in Port-au-Prince, the CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago (AMCHAM), Nirad Tewaire, stated that American and Korean entrepreneurs and investors are taking advantage of the steadily growing Haitian market. "Haiti's best is yet to come. It would therefore be wise, in my view, to get in to the market while it is still early to be able to take advantage of the potentially exponential growth in the years ahead," voiced Nirad. "Few reasons AMCHAM chose to lead the mission to Haiti are because of the preferential arrangements that exist with the US and Haiti, the close proximity of the two markets, and opportunities and incentives for investment in Haiti for re-export to the United States" he added. Investment opportunities abound in Haiti. Aside from the provision of goods and services, the transportation, hospitality, manufacturing and construction and tourism sectors among other sectors present opportunities for local and foreign investment. Incorporating a Haitian company however can be challenging. The World Bank Doing Business report puts the timeline of registering a Haitian legal entity at 97 days, or approximately five months. A simple Haitian company requires at least three shareholders, one of whom must be a Haitian national, a requirement that can be disadvantageous to foreign investors.
