SAN ANTONIO - May 27, 2016 - PRLog -- Costco to Host Book Signing for San Antonio in the Great War

John M. Manguso will be available to sign copies of the local history book

The Alamo City earned the name "Military City USA" not only by virtue of its major military installations but also because of its close and cordial relationship with the US Armed Forces. But in 1916, the year before America entered the Great War, all of that was still in the future. Fort Sam Houston was the largest US Army post in the country, but its attention was focused on the border with Mexico. This changed on April 6, 1917, as the United States needed to quickly raise an expeditionary army of three million men with its attendant air service and send it overseas.

This volume portrays the growth of military facilities and infrastructure in San Antonio during World War I. The majority of the photographs in this book were provided by the museums and military historians at Fort Sam Houston and Randolph Air Force Base as well as local residents private collections.

Highlights of San Antonio in the Great War include:

• Literally hundreds of thousands of young men flowed into the military bases in San Antonio to be turned into soldiers of all kinds including infantry, artillery, pilots, and airplane mechanics.
• In addition to training almost 1,500 pilots, the Kelly Field provided almost 300 flight instructors and more than 4,000 aviation mechanics.
• Many of the civilian buildings used by the Army during the war are still standing, though their "military service" is unknown to most San Antonians.
