Dyson's Supersonic Hairdryer: a good hair day in a gadget?
Dyson have decided it's £299, the price of their newest gadget: the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer. As with everything Dyson, they've attempted to reinvent the wheel. Every feature of the hairdryer has been designed from scratch in order to create an efficient, quiet, powerful and safe piece of equipment. They are sure they've got the design right, because it's taken 600 prototypes, created by 103 engineers, and tested on 1,000 miles of hair, at a cost of £50 million (which would explain the expensive price tag for customers).
Sleek and chic
Even to look at, you get the idea that this is no traditional hairdryer. It's shaped like a mallet, blunt at both ends but hollow to look through, like a doughnut or a CT scanner. That hollow, circular end is hot raspberry pink, contrasting with the sleek gun metal finish of the plastic outer and handle. It certainly looks futuristic, but does it deserve a price tag so enormous that it could turn your cheeks a similar shade of hot pink?
Is it just hot air?
Here's what Dyson has to say on its functionality:
When you think about 100°C air rushing at high velocity, it conjures up the noisy blast of a plane's jet engine as you board by staircase. Buy Dyson are confident that they have engineered the Supersonic to be quieter than other, less efficient models. They haven't confirmed what decibel rating it actually works at, but users have confirmed that it's quieter than the 75 decibels that standard models can reach.
It's well designed for styling, when holding up and angling a hairdryer for a prolonged period can so often cause your wrist to ache. Dyson have designed the Supersonic to keep the motor in the chunky handle, making it an easy to balance weight to hold, with a nice light head which won't cause any strain.
Attachments such as the Dyson Smoothing nozzle enable simultaneous drying and styling, while the Dyson Styling concentrator targets areas of hair with exact precision. The Dyson diffuser produces an even blast of air, making it ideal for drying curls without flattening them or causing frizz. The thoughtful way the attachments work help to make this hairdryer a luxury item: they all use Heat Shield technology, so you will never get burnt by them, and they attach, turn, and detach quickly and easily thanks to their magnetic fastening system.
The Dyson Supersonic has all the features you could want in a hairdryer: powerful, fast drying, versatile styling, quiet, comfortable to hold and a good range of speeds and temperatures. It even looks cool, to boot. The one downside is that hefty price tag, which is double the dollar of other salon-grade hairdryers. But for high-end stylists, daily dryers, gadgets geeks or beauty enthusiasts, it could be worth the temporary pink cheeks when paying, in order to secure yourself that good hair day feeling, every day.
