IoT for Cities Hackathon Inspired Life-Saving Solutions

SAN FRANCISCO - May 23, 2016 - PRLog -- Ciklum, an international custom software development and IT outsourcing company headquartered in Kyiv, Ukraine, won the grand prize at the IoT for Cities Hackathon at Internet of Things World for a defibrillator app that calls 911 as soon as a person uses it and guides the user through life saving procedures.

Organized by Wearable IoT World, the IoT for Cities Hackathon attracted over 600 applications from developers. 220 developers were hand picked to compete for over $30,000 in cash and prizes from sponsors that included Current, powered by GE, Amazon Alexa, Avnet, Cisco,  Pitney Bowes, and Intel.

"The IoT for Cities Hackathon was an incredible opportunity for Ciklum to work with the industry's leading edge technology to build what we value most -- real-world solutions that make a difference," said Christian Aaen, CTO, Ciklum. "It was an honor to have our team of global engineers -- from Ukraine and the US -- compete against the best and brightest of our peers in Silicon Valley to win this year's event."

Ciklum's solution uses Cisco's Spark and Pitney Bowes' APIs to communicate with first responders, the Amazon Alexa voice service to provide information on how to use the defibrillator and keep them informed of the ambulance's progress, and Current by GE's Public Safety API and Traffic Planning API to provide situational awareness with real time location images and traffic information, saving time and lives.

"This hackathon proved the countless innovative applications that digital infrastructure, such as LEDs, and GE's industrial-strength cloud environment, Predix, can unlock.  The developer community is a critical enabler to driving smart city outcomes that propel economic growth and accelerate opportunities for cities and residents alike." - John Gordon, Chief Digital Officer, Current, powered by GE.

"The power of open innovation is tremendous and comes to life in events such as this week's IoT Hackathon. We recently made our location-based APIs available through the Pitney Bowes Commerce Cloud specifically to reach developers like Ciklum to drive the creation of new and unique applications to benefit industry and society." - Roger Pilc, Chief Innovation Officer, Pitney Bowes

"The IoT for Cities Hackathon is a place where developers can innovate around technologies that are actually making a difference in people's lives.  We are excited to be part of these kinds of initiatives, as developers are constantly showing us new and valuable ways to use Alexa." - Paul Cutsinger, Principal Evangelist, Amazon Alexa.

"The IoT for Cities Hackathon was a great opportunity to showcase Cisco's Spark API and how it can support various Smart City solutions.  It gave us the chance to test our product, network with leading edge developers, and create proofs-of-concept around our platform." - Johnny Diggz, Chief Evangelist at Cisco.
