As Mothers Against Drunk Driving's annual Walk Like MADD event kicked off at the Nikon at the Jones Beach Theater, Long Islanders came together to raise funds and awareness of the plague of drunken and impaired driving on Long Island.

According to Steven Schwartzapfel, Founding Partner of Schwartzapfel Lawyers P.C, the work of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is vital to Long Island in calling attention to the lives lost and injured because of drunk/drugged driving, and to raise awareness around the issue of drunk/drugged driving and underage drinking.

"We have seen too many families devastated by accidents caused by drunken or impaired drivers," Schwartzapfel explained. "Long Island is first in many categories, but unfortunately, one of them is drunk driving."

Schwartzapfel cited statistics showing that in each of the past fifteen years, Suffolk County has had more car crashes caused by drunken or impaired driving than any other county in the state, and has also led the state in fatal crashes caused by alcohol. In many of those years, Nassau County was in second place in both categories, causing the New York Times to describe Long Island as "the drunken-driving capital of New York."

In addition to participating in the Walk Like MADD event, Schwartzapfel Lawyers makes a donation to MADD at the conclusion of all cases involving drunk drivers in honor or memory of the victim.

Walk Like MADD is just one the organization's fundraising events and raises both awareness and funds to eliminate drunk driving. Last year, tens of thousands of people in over 80 cities across the nation participated and raised almost 3 million dollars to provide MADD's free programs and services.
