Introduction

Herbicide-resistant weeds plague more than 60 million acres of US farmland. To control weeds, the non-selective herbicide glyphosate that kills most plants is widely sprayed on fields. But it is not possible to only spray weeds without spraying soy and corn crops. Glyphosate is therefore GM to kill only weeds while at the same time enhancing the growth of crops. GM stands for genetically modified. However, glyphosate does not readily penetrate the leaves of weeds and crops, and therefore is mixed with adjuvants that aid leaf penetration. For decades, NPs and specifically CNTs that readily penetrate leaves have been used as adjuvants allowing glyphosate to be carried to plant roots for more efficient absorption. NPs stand for nanoparticles and CNTs for carbon nanotubes.

Upon human consumption of GM foods, most glyphosate and NPs are rapidly excreted, but residues [1] remain in the human gut. Indeed, the important question of NPs in GM foods is the same as that of nanotechnology in general: Whether NPs cause the wide range of health problems illustrated in the thumbnail. Donald Huber, the prominent critic of GM foods claims soil-borne plant pathogens are produced that do indeed harm human health, e.g., residents [2] living close to sprayed GM soybeans fields in Argentina developed cancers and birth defects.

Regardless, the question remains:

Is there a causal link between GM foods and human health?

Problem
Today, the problem is the effect of GM foods on human health is focused almost entirely on the existence of Huber's pathogen instead of clarifying the mechanism how glyphosate and NPs damage human DNA. Only then is a causal link between GM foods and human health biologically plausible .

Proposal
The causal link between ingested GM foods and human health is the DNA damage by UV radiation from NPs in glyphosate residues in the gut. But only UV radiation from the sun is known harmful to human health by causing skin cancers.

How then does GM food in the gut produce UV radiation?

NPs in gut produce UV radiation because they cannot conserve heat by the usual increase in temperature. Similarity is found with ovarian cancer from NPs in talcum powder used in genital areas. See recent PR on "Ovarian cancer from nanoparticles," at http://www.nanoqed.org , 2016.

Background
Currently, damage to human DNA from UV radiation from NPs has not been recognized because classical physics does not admit to the creation of UV radiation. In classical physics, DNA damage is thought to occur by chemical reaction with the NP, but the problem is chemically inert NPs are also known to damage the DNA.

QM differs from classical physics by allowing EM radiation to be created in NPs. QM stands for quantum mechanics and EM for electromagnetic. Classical physics assumes the atoms in NPs have heat capacity, and therefore heat absorbed from the gut only slightly raises the NP temperature, a consequence with insignificant DNA damage.

But QM and not classical physics governs NPs.

Unlike classical physics, QM requires the atoms in NPs to have vanishing heat capacity and therefore NP temperatures cannot increase. Instead, the NPs conserve heat by emitting EM radiation that causes of DNA damage.

Discussion
Vanishing heat capacity of the atom by QM is not new, but the consequence of the Planck law formulated over a century ago. For heat capacity to vanish, however, the NP must be placed under high EM confinement. But this is a natural consequence of NPs having high surface-to-volume ratios requiring absorbed heat to be confined to their surface. Since  the NP temperature cannot increase by QM, conservation proceeds by QED converting the surface heat into EM waves standing between diametrically opposite surfaces. QED stands for quantum electrodynamics.

But QED here differs from the light-matter interaction in the complex QED theory advanced by Feynman and others. Simply stated: Absent heat capacity, heat supplied to a nanoscale QM box with sides separated by distance d is conserved by QED creating standing EM waves having half-wavelength 𝜆 / 2 = n d, where n and d are the refractive index and diameter of the QM box. Once the surface heat is expended in forming the standing waves, the EM confinement vanishes allowing the NP to emit EM radiation that damages the DNA of nearby cells, e.g., zinc oxide NPs having diameter d = 50 nm and n = 2.5 emit UV-C radiation at about 254 nm, a lethal level for the DNA damage in all living systems as the pyrimidine dimers are formed that block DNA replication. Conclusion
Huber's pathogen linking GM foods to diverse health problems ( cancer, autism, birth defects, Parkinson's, etc.) is unlikely to exist. Rather, the diversity of health problems suggests the presence of many different pathogens as the mechanism for their creation is the scrambling of genes from damaged DNA caused by UV radiation emitted by NPs. To protect consumers, DNA damage tests should be performed on GM foods and safe concentrations of NPs labelled accordingly.
