Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria Hosts First Climate Change & Clean Energy Mega Summit

UYO, Nigeria - May 12, 2016 - PRLog -- The summit will anchor an all stakeholders' brainstorming and solution seeking session that would benefit the human and natural environment in Akwa Ibom state: a gathering of experts, intellectuals and major stakeholders in the environment, in strategic and high-level sessions to address salient issues, generate new ideas and approaches as well as chart a roadmap to combat the scourge of climate change in the region.

The summit with the theme CHARTING A ROADMAP FOR A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT AND THE CREATION OF GREEN JOBS IN AKWA IBOM STATE will be held from July 26^th to July 28^th, 2016; with a Special Golf Tournament for Climate Change (''PLAY GOLF FOR CLIMATE CHANGE") on the 30^th of July at the Le' Meridien Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Some coastal communities in Akwa Ibom State are already relocating due to sea level rise and excessive flooding - CLIMATE CHANGE IS THE DEFINING ISSUE OF THE 21ST CENTURY.

In responding to the Climate Change challenge, the administration of His Excellency, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has proactively put in place measures aimed at tackling the impact of climate change in the state. Additionally, the government has also set up the Akwa Ibom State Technical Committee on Climate Change (STCCC) to drive the process of climate change activities.

The First Akwa Ibom State Climate Change and Clean Energy Mega Summit/Expo will include an International Summit & Exhibition; a Climate Walk; Legacy Tree Planting Program; a Green Talk Shop; a State Dinner; an Environmental Governance Award for deserving institutions and individuals; and concurrent activities such as the incorporation of ''PLAY GOLF FOR CLIMATE CHANGE", that is intended to generate funding for some climate solutions activities in Akwa Ibom State.

The Four-day programme will begin with a World Media Chat, an Enlightenment Campaign Roadmap Public Presentation and a Sensitization Workshop on Green Economy/Low Carbon for Sustainable Empowerment in Akwa Ibom State (Making Green Millionaires - a community program).

It should be recalled that the Akwa Ibom State Government was the first and only subnational government that sponsored and hosted a Post COP 21 (Paris Climate Conference) National Dialogue.
