Laurette first appeared on stage as a child in Vaudeville. Her first big success was in 1910 in Alias Jimmy Valentine, and two years later, she struck a chord with audiences in The Bird of Paradise. She married J. Hartley Manners, who then wrote Peg O' My Heart especially for her. The sentimental comedy/drama opened at the Cort Theater in New York on December 20, 1912, and won immediate acclaim. A perfect vehicle for Laurette, she gave more than 600 performances before taking the play on an extended world tour and reviving it several times, notably in 1921. King Vidor's silent movie version with Laurette premiered on December 18, 1922, and nearly two decades later in 1939, she appeared in her final performance of the play in a broadcast on WJZ radio with a full cast, music, and sound effects.
