Follow on Google News | Charity Chief Welcomes Fall In Children's Tooth Decay FiguresBy: Action for Sick Children The chief executive of Action for Sick Children said that figures released in 2008 showed that 177,423 - nearly a third of five year olds in England - had suffered tooth decay. However, by 2015 those figures had dropped to a quarter. "This is wonderful news," said Miss Jackson, speaking from her Cheadle Hulme headquarters. "These figures suggest that our campaigns to highlight the importance of child dental care, especially regular brushing of teeth are having an effect. "Hopefully the Action for Sick Children's "Dental Playbox project" which uses fun, games, puppets and laughter to teach children the value of good dental care has had an impact in educating youngsters and their parents and carers about the significant health benefits from regular teeth brushing. "The drop in tooth decay figures is brilliant news but, whatever you do, don't put your toothbrushes away. These improved figures are simply a move in the right direction. There is still much to do to end the curse of child tooth decay." An estimated 166,467 five-year-olds, less than a quarter, suffer from tooth decay. But while there has been an improvement nationally, experts say there is a great deal of regional variation. The highest rates of tooth decay were found among children living in the North West of England, and the lowest in the South East.
