Cooling Tower Preventive Maintenance

WHIPPANY, N.J. - May 11, 2016 - PRLog -- Proper water treatment and a stringent preventive maintenance program are imperative when it comes to cooling towers in industrial, commercial and institutional settings. Cooling towers collect dust, pollen, and various pollutants during normal operation, and in combination with the tower's warm water, this creates the perfect environment for mold, fungus, algae and bacteria, including deadly legionella. Accumulated contaminants also cause scale and corrosion, which lowers energy efficiency and affects the lifespan of the tower, HVAC systems, and process cooling. Regular maintenance and water treatment is necessary to control corrosion, scale, fouling and microbial growth.

Circulated water should be treated with a descaler in conjunction with biocides, or with chemical-free methods such as pulsed-power or UV water treatment. Cooling towers should be inspected for sediment, scale and slime once a month, and drained, cleaned and disinfected at least twice a year. Pipes, nozzles, and other components should be checked for vibration, leaks, and excessive noise. Drift eliminators should be pressure washed, and sump screens should be cleared to allow maximum flow to the pump. Inspect heaters for broken or cracked elements, replace belts, and lubricate motors as needed.
