Nonprofit Group Promotes Advocacy, Awareness of Preventable Disease Washington, D.C. (May 10, 2016) - D.C.-based nonprofit Cervivor is hosting Stirrup Stories-Narratives Beyond the Speculum at the Howard Theatre from 6pm to 10pm on Thursday, May 12 in Washington, D.C. "Braxton Family Values" star Traci Braxton (http://www.tracibraxton.com/) The event, which coincides with National Women's Health Week, will include a benefit performance, reception, dinner and dancing. Event producers expect a diverse audience of advocates, survivors, medical researchers, local luminaries, supporters and media to attend - all to empower women and benefit Cervivor (http://www.cervivor.org/ Tamika Felder, Cervivor Founder and Chief Visionary, says, "Cervical cancer is a cancer that we can do something about. Unfortunately, the rates of cervical cancers among women in D.C. - especially among African-American women - are still too high." Approximately 4,200 women die from cervical cancer annually and research shows when African-American women are diagnosed they are twice as likely to die (http://www.healthyblackwomen.org/ Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers for which the cause (of most cases) is known: Human Papillomavirus or HPV. Co-testing (Pap + HPV tests) is vital in preventing and diagnosing the disease, otherwise a woman will not know she has it. That was Felder's experience. If not for a doctor's visit to investigate a boil under her arm, she would not have known that she had cervical cancer. She founded Cervivor 11 years ago following her recovery. According to the American Cancer Society, 95 percent of cervical cancers would be eliminated with HPV vaccination. "I'm extremely proud of the women who are traveling from as close as northern Virginia and as far as the west coast to share their "Stories from the Stirrups" in order to spread awareness and prevent cervical cancer," Felder says. Stirrup Stories is a fun event to celebrate our 10+ years of advocacy work, and to bring awareness to a cancer for which we have the tools to eliminate." In addition to the celebrity guests, Stirrup Stories will spotlight a variety of women creatively sharing their experiences with their gynecologic health through storytelling, comedy, poetry, art, spoken word, monologues, etc. Sponsors are Hologic, Quest, and Roche, to name a few. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here (https://www.eventbrite.com/ About Cervivor Cervivor is a community, a learning tool, an advocacy resource, and an online retreat for healing, connecting and thriving.
