Connecticut Biz Leaders on Trans-Pacific Partnership

By: RecoveryPlanner

HARTFORD / WATERBURY, Conn. - May 6, 2016 - PRLog -- CONNECTICUT - As presidential candidates debate international trade and its effect on American businesses, Connecticut business leaders discuss the Trans-Pacific Partnership ahead of today's primary.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement between the United States and 11 other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, is expected to reduce many of the barriers that smaller businesses face when doing business abroad. Business leaders across Connecticut have said that increasing access to international markets would boost their revenues and enable them to hire more workers.

In 2014, Connecticut exported $4.6 billion in goods to TPP partner countries, comprising 29 percent of Connecticut's total exports. Of the 2,969 Connecticut businesses that exported to TPP countries in 2013, 88 percent were small businesses.

Below is a sample of quotes from Connecticut business leaders. If you would like to speak with a business leader about international trade policies, please contact Rachel Harvey Katz at RHarvey@BusinessFWD.org or 202-470-1318.

"As a consumer product manufacturer in the United States, our intellectual property and brand is the essence of our business. Exporting American products like ours is challenging, because we currently have little to no recourse if our IP is stolen," said Beverlee Dacey, President of Amodex (http://amodexink.com/) Products in Bridgeport. "The Trans-Pacific Partnership would make it easier to enforce copyrights and trademarks on my family's stain removal products. Additionally, it will reduce tariffs that currently make our products extremely costly to bring to market."

"The American Natural Soda Ash Corporation estimates that the immediate elimination of tariffs upon implementation of the TPP will result in over $20 million in new U.S. soda ash exports to TPP countries. The tariff elimination results will enable ANSAC to better compete against China in Asian and other key markets. This will benefit jobs in Connecticut and elsewhere in the United States," said Chris Douville, President of ANSAC (http://www.ansac.com/), headquartered in Westport.

"The U.S. industrial hemp industry is just beginning as of 2014. The Trans-Pacific Partnership will affect my business immensely as foreign markets dominate sales of hemp products," said Tatianna Gildersleeve, CEO and Founder of Tredway White Inc. in Greenwich.

"As a small-sized software business, our two largest concerns with growing internationally are the assurance that our intellectual property is protected and navigating each country's differing taxes, tariffs and duties. With the Pacific Rim region being the fastest growing area in the world, we would like to feel comfortable in these two matters when exporting there, which having a trade agreement, whether it is the Trans-Pacific Partnership or one like it, would provide. Having such an agreement in place sooner rather than later will encourage our company to proceed with exporting to countries of this region more aggressively and perhaps to some countries we probably wouldn't pursue otherwise," said Monica Goldstein, the Chief Operating Officer at RecoveryPlanner (https://www.recoveryplanner.com/) in Trumbull.
