GIG HARBOR, Wash. - May 4, 2016 - PRLog -- Advance planning is extremely important to surviving a catastrophe. For pet families, this includes planning for the safety and wellbeing for animal companions as well. This National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, Sturdi Products Inc. is sharing helpful tips on how to plan ahead so that pet parents know what to do in case a disaster strikes.

What Disasters Are Possible? Do you live near the ocean or a high-risk flood zone? Are hurricanes or tornados common in your location? The first step is to evaluate your home and area and understand what types of emergencies are most common. Identify the risks and begin to plan the steps you need to take in order to prepare your fur-friend.

Proper Identification Is Crucial. Although collars and ID tags are a necessity, collars can slip off and tags can become lost during the chaos of an emergency. A microchip is the best way to identify and provide contact information to help reunite your four-legged friend with you quickly during a disaster.

Have An Emergency "Go Bag" Ready! This bag should have essential documents and supplies should you have to relocate to a shelter or another location during an emergency. A few important items to include:

·         A picture of your pet in case he or she gets separated from the family.

·         Your personal contact information.

·         Any medication your pet is taking.

·         Copies of vet and vaccination records.

·         Food, treats, bottled water, along with food and water bowls. The SturdiBox™ foldable multi-purpose box is a great option for both food and water.

·         Cat litter box, litter, litter scoop, garbage bags and/or doggy poop bags.

·         Blankets, towels, toys.

·         Leash, harnesses, collar, and an extra pet ID tag.

·         A durable carrier and portable containment for transporting and sheltering your pets.  Sturdi Products has a variety of carriers, portable pop-up shelters, and even a pet tent that would benefit pets and owners greatly in an emergency situation.

Testing Your Plan Is Best! Everyone in the family should be on the same page and informed on the emergency plan for evacuating the house in a timely and efficient manner. It's a good idea to test your plan to see how long it would take to get you, your family, your pets and those important items out of the house and on the road safe and sound.

Communicate With Neighbors: What would happen to Fido or Fluffy if an emergency happened while you were away from the home? It's a smart idea to talk to your neighbors about creating an emergency plan with them also, should something occur and you are not there. By communicating with neighbors, you can determine a plan to get your animal out of house and then safely transported to a predetermined location.

May 14th's National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day is an important opportunity for pet parents to brainstorm a plan of action and decide what their pet will need during a natural disaster or other emergency situation. These simple preparations will help to ensure the safety of four-legged friends and give owners great peace of mind during any unexpected disaster!
