By: Vision-Strike-Wear.Com So who is the USS Duluth? Who was she? USS Duluth (LPD-6), an Austin-class amphibious transport dock, is the second ship of the United States Navy named for the city in Minnesota. Duluth was laid down on 18 December 1963 by the New York Naval Shipyard. She was launched on 14 August 1965 and commissioned on 18 December 1965. She was the last ship to be launched from the Brooklyn Navy Yard before it was closed. So with that said as the amazing amphibian she was it made only sense to design a coin with a Navy Gator on it. Something mean and nasty, aggressive, detailed and designed with a gator in plain view. The coin request was for a 2 inch coin and they the association wanted something think that would feel heavy and substantial like a 4mm thick coin is recognized for. The result was overwhelmingly positive. So much so that this coin had to be reordered very quickly due to its popularity. More just arrived the other day.
