Woodbury University Announces College of Liberal Arts; Expands Degree Programs

Former College of Transdisciplinarity Poised to Extend University's Academic Reach

April 27, 2016 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES (April 26, 2016) - Woodbury University (http://www.woodbury.edu/) today announced the formation of the College of Liberal Arts, joining the Schools of Architecture, Business and Media, Culture & Design.  Formerly the College of Transdisciplinarity, the new designation reflects the College's expansion of its degree programs and its ongoing dedication to educating students in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences through close interaction between faculty and students.  The College of Liberal Arts stands at the heart of the university's new mission to "transform students into innovative professionals who will contribute responsibly to the global community."

"The College of Liberal Arts represents the continuing development of the University towards greater diversity and inclusion," said Douglas J. Cremer, Ph.D. and Dean of the College.  "Our primary focus is to support the liberal arts enterprise of the university and function as a place for discussions and research while developing a variety of new undergraduate and graduate degree programs under that broad umbrella."

According to the American Association of Colleges and Universities, education in the liberal arts "provides students with broad knowledge of the wider world (e.g. science, culture, and society) as well as in-depth study in a specific area of interest.  A liberal education helps students develop a sense of social responsibility, as well as strong and transferable intellectual and practical skills such as communication, analytical and problem-solving skills, and a demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world settings."

Woodbury's College of Liberal Arts offers courses in art history, biology, economics, environmental science, history, interdisciplinary studies, literature, mathematics, philosophy, physics, politics, urban studies, and writing.  Degree programs include Bachelors of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, Leadership, Politics and History, Professional Writing, and Public Safety Administration, as well as a Master of Arts in Leadership.

Like its predecessor, the College of Liberal Arts is designed to provide a nexus where Woodbury's core values - Community, Integrity, Professionalism, Aspiration, and Agility - can intersect with its four educational pillars: Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, Civic Engagement and Transdisciplinarity.
