SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - April 25, 2016 - PRLog -- Downtown San Rafael will soon be hosting a new museum to educate students and adults about the dangers of propaganda.

The Museum of International Propaganda, which will exhibit one of the most comprehensive collections of 20th century visual propaganda on the West Coast, will open Saturday May 7th at 10 a.m. in San Rafael at 1000 5th Avenue. Admission to the museum is free and guided tours will be offered. Tea, coffee and wine will be served

The museum's goal is to raise awareness of the dangers of propaganda by showing some of the one-sided messages created by governments and organizations around the world who attempt to shape perceptions for ideological purposes. The museum's collection includes more than 1,000 items, including posters, statues, books and cinema   from various countries, including North Korea, Vietnam, Nazi Germany, Cuba, and the Soviet Union.

The collection has been curated by Tom and Lilka Areton of San Rafael, who have operated Cultural Homestay International, a student exchange program, for 35 years in Marin. The Aretons have assembled their collection of visual propaganda over a period of decades during their frequent travels around the globe.

"Our hope is to assist the American public to recognize and understand the influence of 20th century propaganda as it projects itself powerfully on our lives today," said Lilka Areton. "Our family's experience with propaganda has had a profound effect on our lives."

Tom Areton lived in the Socialist Czechoslovakia most of his young life. Tom's mother lived under Slovak and German National Socialist (Nazis) as well as Communist regimes and their propaganda for over 60 years. Lilka has traveled to the Soviet Union a number of times, beginning in 1960, and has added elements from various historical periods to the collection.

Regular museum hours are Wednesday-Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday from Noon-9 p.m. The museum also includes an international gift shop. The Free Speech Café, a coffeehouse adjacent to the museum, will be opened in the late summer of 2016. The Café will offer special Brazilian coffee and Austro-Hungarian pastries.

The Museum of International Propaganda will host a regular forum on Thursday evening from 6:30 p.m.-10 p.m. that will feature films, lectures, debates, testimonials and discussions.
