Follow on Google News | Social Ballroom In The City - Mr Dance is celebrating its 25th AnniversaryBy: Mr Dance Club Are you a Baby Boomer? Or Generation X? Do you need a hobby, or something to stimulate your brain? Do you want to feel hip again? Great! This is your opportunity to get off of your couches and arm chairs and discover the hidden jewels of the bustling city of Vancouver. Unbeknownst to many, Mr Dance has offered social dance nights at the Vancouver Alpen Club (VAC) (Victoria Dr. and 33rd Ave.) for more than four years. Neatly settled in the suburbs of Kensington, the VAC not only houses a premium restaurant with a wide selection of authentic European and local cuisine, but also offers a unique opportunity for those interested to go upstairs and dance off the dinner courses with Mr Dance. Mr Dance operates at the VAC on Sundays, starting with a 1-hour dance lesson at 6:30 p.m. followed by social dancing to the tunes of Latin and ballroom dance music. The night ends at 11 p.m. with a ticket price of only $12. Mr Dance is celebrating its 25th anniversary in May this year, and now it has become the longest running dance venue in its original format, in Vancouver. This is a very popular dance event, which requires no membership, singles and couples are welcome and you can learn up to 11 dances in a year! During its long operation, Mr Dance has offered many dance styles including International Ballroom Standard and Latin, American Smooth and Rhythm, Swing, Nightclub, Country, Line dance, and Argentine Tango. Mr Dance's 25th Anniversary celebration party will take place on May 29th at the Vancouver Alpen Club ballroom. Mr Dance has long traditions and milestone achievements since it opened its doors in 1991. It started at a Buddhist Temple on the east side of Vancouver (Salisbury Dr. and 1st Ave.) where Mr Dance (aka Michael) was teaching martial arts and two other ladies (Elsie and Lee) were taking lessons. At that time, there was a retiring dance running at the Buddhist Temple. The three became business partners and took over. The dance nights counted more than 200 people in attendance in those days and the ticket price was a mere $2.50! Mr Dance continued at the Buddhist Temple until 1996 when it moved to Astorino's Hall (Venables St. and Commercial Dr.) where it had its long-running stint for fifteen years. In 2012, it relocated to VAC where it has been offering social ballroom dance evenings ever since. Mr Dance is no stranger to publicity. Papers like The Vancouver Courier (2003) and The Voice (2006) wrote about its dance nights; The Unique Guidebook to Vancouver's Hidden Sites, Sounds and Tastes short-listed its dance venue (2003); it was featured in The Province newspaper and in a local CBC TV show called "Salsa for Love" (2008). Are you a Millennial? No problem! Mr Dance plays some Top 40 and Hustle, too! Experience the dances your parents fell in love with, learn the Latin and classic ballroom dancing, which was the part of the general education for your elders, and meet people. Find new friends in the friendly dancing community who can tell stories even the younger generation may find intriguing. Get passionate about dancing, take it to a higher level; you can achieve much more than you would think! Andras S.
