WOODBURY, Minn. - April 22, 2016 - PRLog -- Aabbott Ferraro, an HVAC repair and installation company near Woodbury, discusses common system repairs needed to get air conditioners ready to run for the summer season.

With warmer temperatures just around the corner, it is time for homeowners to get their air conditioning units in order. After not working all winter long, many air conditioners need some repair work to get up and running again. Aabbott Ferraro would like to go over some common HVAC repairs that people may encounter with their AC unit.

Blown fuses are a common reason for an HVAC unit to not work properly. Fuses defend the unit's motor or compressor against overheating. The fuses are found in the evaporator coil.

HVAC units have three contactors per unit: one for the compressor, one for the condenser fan motor and one for the blower motor. The contactors connect when there is a need for cooling or heating, setting an electrical connection. This begins to run the compressor and motors. If these become worn, the unit will not function.

The run capacitor helps the motors run at consistent speeds, rated in microfarads. The start compressor provides a brief increase in starting torque. This needs to be in working order to start the AC unit.

Filters need to be checked and replaced if needed. Filters filter air particles and should be changed once dirty. One way to tell if the filter needs to be changed is to hold it up to the light and see if light passes through. If no light, change the filter.

The thermostat should also be checked. This device tells the system what to do and when to do it, as far as what temperature either the heat or cool will kick on.

Drain lines frequently become blocked with dirt or algae so should be checked and cleaned if necessary. Also, refrigerant leaks can occur with vibration of the unit during operation.

The compressor is the heart of the AC unit and is located with the condenser coil. The condenser coil is located outside along the compressor. Exposed to the outdoor elements, condenser coils can often get dirty and should be cleaned at least yearly.

On split systems the evaporator coil is located in the attic, but on a package unit it is located outside with the rest of the unit. If the coil is located inside, cleaning will only be necessary if suggested and should only be about every three years or so. If the evaporator coil cracks, and HVAC professional will need to fix it.

The best way for homeowners to be sure their air conditioning unit is ready for the summer is to have a qualified HVAC repair company like Aabbott Ferraro inspect the system and make any needed adjustments.
