Mary Ellen Popkin Life Insurance Agent and Recruiter shares Why become a Life Insurance Agent
Many excellent reasons to become a Life Insurance Agent but it's the personal stories that make it a passion not just a career.
You have more control over your schedule than in tradition job or careeers. This is attractive especially to parents who reget missing too many of their children's school or after school activities.
Your provide a service many people want and need and this particular aspect of being a Life Insurance Agent became a personal experience for Mary Ellen with one particular couple she sold a policy.
It was a typical lead a young couple with a new baby girl who wanted to purchase a life insurance policy to protect their young baby. One thing you learn as you sit across the kitchen table from a client is the reason why they want insurance because that is your job in order to sell them the best policy for their needs. "It's always about the clients goals and needs" according to Mary Ellen Popkin.
The Husband explained how he wanted a policy that would ensure his wife and daughter would be able to stay in their home. He shared how they met in their homeland Portugal when they were in High School. He fell in love at first sight but she was only a freshman and he was a senior. He made a plan to make it in America and come back and court her. It worked they were married after she graduated.
During those three years he moved to America and worked two jobs. He saved up enough money to purchase a fixer-upper and worked on it in his free time. After it was done he rented out the house but lived in the basement in a very spartn manner. Due to his hard work and determination he got decent paying job. He would go back to Portugal but this time he was ready to ask her family if they would give her hand in marriage.
She accepted and they moved to America. She got a job and they continued to save until it was time to sell the house they were renting and use the proceeds to purchase a home to begin a family.
When I met them he had a career in sales, a new home and a new baby girl. She was a stay at home Mom they had achieved their American Dream. They contacted me because they wanted to protect that dream just in case something happend to either one of them.
We wrote up a policy for each of them but a larger one for him since he was the breadwinner in the home. It's always about what the customer wants and needs. I wish that was the end of the story and I only had contact with them again to discuss additional financial services but about 2 years after we wrote up those policies this loving Husband and Father died of cancer at the age of thirty. There daughter wasn't even three years old.
It is always sad when someone dies so young but I ran into this young widow and her now five year old daughter about two years later. They were coming out of a Karate class the little girl was taking. She looked so much like her Daddy. When we saw each other this strong, beautiful young widow invited me to lunch and I accepted.
We sat there at that kitchen table where I had sold them their policies. She was excited for her daughter to meet me not because I sold them the policy that let them stay in their home but as she exclaimed with joy in her voice to her daugther "Mary Ellen knew your Daddy" Yes, I did know her Daddy and delighted in sharing how he looked at her with such love in his eyes as she made little cooing sounds as an infant. I recanted the story about how he fell in love with her Mother at first sight and was so nervous when he asked for her hand in marriage.
I wish the stoy ended with them alive and living in that house but I was comforted as she said to me "Nancy, their daughter's name, is living out the Dream her Daddy and I planned when she was born"
That is why we do this business. You can become a life insurance agent for the money, the scheduling freedom but always remember we can change lives for the better.
