FARMINGTON, Conn. - April 20, 2016 - PRLog -- Meredith Marinaro, DCI UConn Dialysis dietitian, was awarded the National Kidney Foundation's 2015 Recognized Renal Dietitian of the Year. This prestigious award is designed to "honor a dietitian who has demonstrated exceptional abilities of leadership, creativity and public involvement in the area of renal nutrition."

Meredith has demonstrated her leadership, creativity and involvement through her commitment to the Council of Renal Nutrition of New England since 2010 where she served on the planning committee to organize biannual meetings for renal dietitians in the area. She is currently on the NKF-CRN Executive Committee serving as a liaison between the local assemblies and the National Kidney Foundation and working to actively develop new and valuable resources for renal dietitians. In addition, she is an adjunct professor of renal nutrition at the University of New Haven.

"I love the community within the renal field and the opportunities for outreach and relationship building," she said. "Being a renal dietitian has allowed me to balance a strong clinical nutrition program with interpersonal relationships."

Meredith received two B.S. degrees in biology and dietetics from the University of Rhode Island before pursuing a graduate degree in nutrition from the University of St. Joseph. She is a Certified Renal Nutrition Specialist and has been a Registered Dietitian since 2003. Since 2005, she has been with DCI, after being drawn in by the mission and nonprofit status of the organization.

"The best part about my job is the people I get to work with," she said. "I love the different relationships I have developed with my patients over the past 10 years at DCI. I enjoy seeing them benefit from a follow up or a small recommendation I can help with. I love to walk through this journey with them."

Meredith has also been involved with a number of DCI projects over the years, including significant contributions and dietary analysis for DCI's first renal cookbook, Kidney Cooking (http://www.dciinc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/KidneyCo...).

"Meredith impacts not only our DCI patients, but reaches out to improve the quality of care for all End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients by training dietitian students from two universities and working with other ESRD dietitians to enhance education and collaborate on projects that directly impact the patients' lives," said James Reid, administrator for DCI Uconn Dialysis. "Meredith continues to contribute to fulfilling DCI's vision of being the quality leader in the kidney community. She is recognized by her peers, the physicians and the staff in the clinics for her value and dedication to pursuing excellence every day in empowering patients to live their best possible life."

Meredith will be formally presented with her award at the National Kidney Foundation's Spring Clinical Meeting on April 28th.
