Notion Press presents author Aditi Bhagat with her book The Digital Panopticon

The plot is set against the backdrop of a China of the near future, and is narrated through the eyes of Kris, an ordinary Chinese citizen who takes pride in his regime's supremacy. The story gains momentum when an American technology giant, Orion, enters the Chinese market. Kris witnesses the company's Machiavellian entry and feels the kindling of a change, leading to a revolution, challenging the existing socio-political landscape of the country.

The story shows Orion leveraging the power of information is possesses, and succeeding in awakening a suppressed society from its slumber, spurring it to demand accountability and freedom from its regime. Initially a naysayer himself, Kris too turns a supporter of the rebellion that Orion manages to spur. Orion, with a whopping repository of data, capitalises on its technological infrastructure to fight the regime, and comes very close to changing the country's established political structure.

So, can the technically empowered Orion challenge the established political order? Is Kris on the right side of the revolution? Will Kris be able to ride the waves or will he be tossed around helpless in the sea of change, falling prey to Information Age's omnipotent, omniscient Frankenstein?

The book clearly shows how the possession of data can actually make one superior over another and can cause harm equal to that of armed warfare.

Born in New Delhi and an alumnus of IIT Roorkee, Aditi Bhagat is currently a student at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.
