AUSTIN, Texas - April 19, 2016 - PRLog -- Demand Metric and VisionEdge Marketing released the 15th annual marketing performance management (MPM) benchmarking study findings. This ongoing study strives to understand how marketing organizations can achieve superior performance measurement and management and serve as Centers of Excellence. This year's MPM study reveals that progress over the past year was both real and illusory.

The C-Suite message is loud and clear; marketers need to be more driven to produce real, actionable insights from their data. Marketing organizations wanting to earn or keep their seat at the corporate leadership table must focus on both sides of the analytics coin: data and metrics. Failure to do so creates the appearance of progress without producing real results.

"Selecting the right metrics, ones that measure what truly matters to the business, remains the primary obstacle for measuring Marketing's impact, contribution, and value. The right metrics represent the first link in the MPM chain that leads to improving marketing's results and credibility," said Laura Patterson, president, VisionEdge Marketing. "Once Marketing selects the right metrics, it must practice persistence in applying them, and this persistence is a characteristic of best-in-class marketers."

The study segments marketers into three personas: Value Creators, the most effective marketers; Sales Enablers, the middle-of-the-pack marketers; and Campaign Producers, the laggards who earn the lowest performance marks. Key findings of the study include:

• The ratio of marketers earning top marks for their ability to demonstrate their value and impact - the Value Creators - remains unchanged from last year, only 1 in 4. The study results constitute a "call to arms" for this elite group of marketers: by resting on their past success, they have actually lost ground.
• Value Creators are better by a factor of three to five at data usage. Over half of Value Creators improved their impact on business results with six of the nine key business measures.
• The number of marketers moving into the ranks of Sales Enablers grew and represents 40% of study participants. This year's study tells a story about how this group advanced toward Value Creator status. The Sales Enablers, the Middle of the Pack group, is the only group that experienced increased satisfaction with their MPM capabilities.
• Measuring marketing's value and contribution remains a top priority, rated 8.9 by Value Creators on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 equals "extremely important." The challenge in measuring value lies in selecting the right metrics.
• The use of dashboards, practiced by almost 80 percent of Value Creators, correlates to improvement in and satisfaction with marketing measurement and reporting, Marketing's ability to justify its value, and how well marketing metrics measure factors that link Marketing's results to corporate business objectives.
• Marketing organizations that are more proficient at using data to make strategic and investment decisions are also more credible, influential, and relevant.
• The best performing marketing teams know more than marketing; they understand the business. Over two-thirds of study participants report that Value Creators demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the financial, accounting and operational aspects of the business.

"What the current study teaches us is that a marketer's MPM capabilities will atrophy if they're not in constant use," says Jerry Rackley, chief analyst at Demand Metric Research Corporation. "The Value Creators are still the best, still the most capable of using data and metrics to manage Marketing's performance and deliver results.

But what we see in this year's study is that they can't take time off from doing this. Any marketing organization that allows itself to get distracted from MPM is coasting, or at worst, standing still where MPM progress is concerned. We discovered that standing still results in drifting backward, because the ground on which marketing organizations stand is constantly moving. The results from this year's study should inspire marketers to find their second wind and press forward with MPM initiatives."
